Novak Djokovic is one of the greatest of all time because he has been one of the most consistent players over the years, and he's well aware of that.
Djokovic will compete at the ATP Finals as one of the favorites again. He has enjoyed incredible success at the event in the past. He won his first title at the year-end championship back in 2008 when the tournament was still called the World Tour Finals.
Now, Djokovic looked back on that performance. He felt like he was playing some inspired tennis, especially since he was a very young player back then.
"Back in 2008, I was still a youngster, and [only] qualified for the second time for the World Tour Finals. I remember I was on a run [in Shanghai]. I remember my performances very well and played a really fantastic five matches."
It didn't end up being the last time he would win the event either, as he was able to add more trophies to his collection. The event changed the venue multiple times, but for Djokovic, the most successful host city was London, where he won 19 out of 20 matches he played there across four years between 2012 and 2015.
"That was the best run I ever had, no doubt."
Djokovic knows that not many players have been able to have the success that he has enjoyed in recent years. He admitted that the key is being very consistent.
"One of the greatest challenges I think that a tennis professional has on the men’s Tour is consistency. That always has been my goal, to try to be continuously solid, week in, week, out, particularly at the big events, Grand Slams and Masters 1000s."
"To be able to qualify for the last eight but also to be able to build ranking points and stay at the top of the men’s game as much as possible. I was able to do that incredibly well in that period, so I would say that is the best run I had."
