After news broke about Maria Francisca Perello's hospitalization a few days ago, Rafael Nadal has since confirmed that she is fine and doing well.
According to early reports, his wife, who is 31 weeks pregnant, has apparently been admitted to a facility in Mallorca with mention of surgery. The baby was not in danger, and Perello was healing, but physicians advised that she stay in the hospital for a few weeks to be under supervision, according to a story in the national Spanish newspaper MARCA on Wednesday.
Contrary to the numerous media-fueled suspicions, Nadal insisted that his wife was well during his post-match press conference at the US Open on Thursday:
"As much as certain types of information came out in the press about my wife's condition, my wife is fine."
On Saturday, Rafael Nadal will compete against former World No. 7 Richard Gasquet. His astounding 17-0 win-loss record against the Frenchman should give him confidence coming into the match.
