While some were disappointed by Nick Kyrgios' withdrawal from the 2023 United Cup, it made one person happy and he made sure to thank his compatriot.

Jason Kubler got a chance to represent his country after the highest-ranked Australian withdrew from the event. Team captain Lleyton Hewitt was particularly disappointed, stating that Kyrgios' decision was accompanied by "lack of communication".

Despite the criticism, Kubler sees Kyrgios' withdrawal as a chance for him to step up and represent his country. "I actually messaged him after my match against Evo," he admitted. "I messaged him, Thank you so much for the opportunity. Basically, I hope your body gets better, and we can have a hit before the Australian Open."

Kubler has certainly made the most of the opportunity, as he has defeated Daniel Evans in the tie against the United Kingdom. The Australian won 6-3, 7-6(3) as he managed to come back from 0-5 and 0-30 down in the second set.

While Kyrgios' withdrawal may have disappointed some, it appears that Kubler is grateful for the chance to represent his country. "That's the way I see it. He could have played, and he could have done unbelievably well, like I know we all think he can. Fortunately, he gave me the opportunity to play, and I have sort of taken it with both hands and run with it."

He also admitted that he would like to see higher-ranked compatriot face off against some of the best in the game. "Me personally, as much as I would have loved to see that Rafa/Kyrgios match or the Kyrgios/Norrie match, but yeah, just one of those things where, yeah, luckily he handed me the opportunity and I'm just going for it," he added.
