Novak Djokovic lost his winning streak to Jannik Sinner at the ATP Finals, and he knows exactly what went wrong in the match.
The match itself was a pretty good one and very close. We saw two tiebreaks, and the only set that didn't finish in a tiebreak finished 7-5. Sinner played really well, but so did Djokovic; the only difference is that Sinner consistently outperformed Djokovic in the key moments.
He proved calmer and made fewer mistakes than his opponent, which goes a long way in these close matches. Speaking after the match, Djokovic praised his opponent for stepping up and delivering a good performance but also highlighted some of the things he did badly in the match to lose it.
Well, I think last time we played was semis in Wimbledon. I won in straight sets, but it was very close match. Few points here and there decided every set. Game-wise I think he was playing as well as he's playing today. Maybe serving better. But I think the main difference is that in the important points, he was going for it, he was more courageous.
Djokovic also said that his opponent deserved to win because he was going for it in the key moments while the Serbian wasn't.
Yeah, he deserved to win because in important moments I wasn't I guess aggressive enough, I wasn't decisive enough. I gave him opportunity to take the control over the points. Yeah, 5-All third set, 15-30, second serve, I was in the rally and should have stepped in and didn't, and he did.
You have to just congratulate him. He just played a fantastic match. That's what I told him at the net. I think in the most important moments, he played his best game and he absolutely deserved to win.
