Jannik Sinner Explains Paris Masters Withdrawal

by Sebastian Dahlman

Jannik Sinner made a public statement about his decision to withdraw from the 2023 Paris Masters, citing health as the reason why he did so.

Sinner wasn't quite lucky with the schedule recently, as his match was dead last on the main court of the Paris Masters. The event has a night session with two matches that start at around 19:30 local time.

Unfortunately for Sinner, the day schedule bled into the night session, pushing everything back. It was dramatic that his match started after midnight and finished some 20 minutes before 3 a.m. local time.

To make matters worse, he was scheduled to play during the day the following day, some 14 hours after he finished the match. Obviously, finishing a match doesn't mean that a tennis player is done.

There is a cool-down period; there are treatments to be done, traveling back to the hotel, and then trying to sleep after such an adrenaline high. Who knows when Sinner even got to bed, let alone how much he slept?

To play made very little sense, so he pulled out, opting to preserve his body for the ATP Finals in Turin. It's a home event for Sinner, who has high hopes of winning it.

He didn't comment on the withdrawal immediately but has since released a statement, which you can read below.

I am sorry to announce that I am withdrawing from today's match in Bercy. I finished the match when it was almost 3 in the morning and didn't go to bed until a few hours later. I had less than 12 hours to rest and prepare for the next game.

I have to make the right decision for my health and my body. The weeks ahead with the ATP Finals at home and the Davis Cup will be very important, now I focus on preparing for these important events. See you in Turin! Force!
