Seems that the illness of Jannik Sinner is more serious than it seemed as he was forced to withdraw from the 2023 Madrid Open.
The Italian struggled with an injury or two last year, but his 2023 has been very good so far. Sinner won 26 matches and lost only six, while also lifting a trophy in Montpellier. Then, he reached the final in Miami, and played semifinals in Monte Carlo, before joining the 2023 Barcelona Open.
The 21-year-old was successful in his first matches in Barcelona, but he was forced to withdraw from the quarterfinal match against Lorenzo Musetti because of an illness, and now, a withdrawal from the 2023 Madrid Open followed as he'll miss yet another event. After withdrawing from Barcelona, he announced:
"Sad to have to withdraw from my match today in Barcelona. I’ve been feeling unwell for a few days now. Today the sickness got worse and I'm not able to play. I’ll take some time to rest and try to be ready for my next matches. Thanks for all your support and good luck to Lorenzo for the rest of the tournament."
Now we know that Sinner couldn't recover in time for the ATP 1000 tournament in Madrid, where he lost in the third round last year. But surely, the focus for the Italian will be his home event in Rome, where he played quarterfinals in 2022.
It's not yet clear what are Sinner's plans, but he will be hoping to be ready for the 2023 Italian Open in Rome, and if not, the 2023 Roland Garros will surely be a point where the Italian will want to peak during the clay-court season.
