Daniil Medvedev lost the World No. 1 spot after the 2022 US Open, but it's not something that would make him very sad.
Medvedev won the US Open title in 2021. That meant he returned to New York this year with a challenging task. That task was defending 2,000 points from last year's win.
Since Nick Kyrgios eliminated Medvedev from the tournament earlier than expected, the Russian player lost the vast majority of his points. As a result, he dropped to the World No. 4 position.
On the other hand, Carlos Alcaraz enjoyed a great fortnight in the United States. He won his maiden Grand Slam title and rose to the World No. 1 rank. He's followed by Casper Ruud and Rafael Nadal, who are ranked No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.
Medvedev, however, despite being surpassed by these three players, didn't seem to care too much about losing his top spot in the rankings. The Russian player talked to Eurosport about how he felt after losing the No. 1 position.
"To be honest, I didn't feel much when I lost the No. 1 spot. The ranking is the consequence of your results and if we take the American summer, for example, I did not take enough points to stay No. 1, or even No. 2 or 3."
"Whereas Casper, Carlos, Rafa, [Nadal], of course, with the two Grand Slams he won at the start of the year, they took a lot more points. So, it's just logical. I have no feelings about it, no reason to cry. I can only tell myself that I have to do better if I want to find this place in the future."
Since the indoor hard court season is one of his favorites, Medvedev will have a chance to reclaim the top spot during the last part of the season.
