Holger Rune bested Felix Auger-Aliassime a few weeks ago, but can he do it again at the 2023 Swiss Indoors in vastly different circumstances? Find out in the preview below.
Holger Rune hasn't been playing that well up until this event. He had an active losing streak before Beijing, but he snapped it there by beating Auger-Aliassime. It was his first win in over two months and quite a significant one for his confidence.
It was also proof that the Canadian was not playing that well either, but he, too, improved this week. They have put forward some great performances in Basel this week in the hopes of finishing the year on a high note.
Playing against each other isn't unfamiliar to them because we have seen three matches so far on the ATP Tour. Rune leads 2-1 having beaten the Canadian player last year in Paris en route to the trophy as well as recently in Beijing.
The only win Auger-Aliassime had was in Basel actually. They played in the final last year, and the Canadian won in two sets.
So, what does all of this mean? Well, a couple of things. Neither is really playing their best tennis right now, although I feel like Rune is closer. He's looked really determined this week, and so far, it's been going really well for him.
Auger-Aliassime has been solid as well, but he faced more problems in his matches and actually saved a match point in his last one. The match also finished quite late, which could impact the freshness of the Canadian in this match.
We also have the recent match in which Rune won; however, indoors gives Auger-Aliassime far more chances to win. All in all, I still prefer Rune because I like what I've seen from him this week. I think it's a matchup he can win when we look at all the factors.
Prediction: Holger Rune to win in two sets.
