Holger Rune vs Borna Coric: 2024 Montpellier Open - Preview & Prediction

| by Zachary Wimer

Holger Rune is back to winning ways at the 2024 Montpellier Open, but will he keep that going against Borna Coric?

The Croatian is a really fascinating player. When you look at him, you see a solid serve, a solid forehand, and a solid backhand, so you kind of think to yourself, why isn't he in the Top 10?

To be honest, there's no clear answer to why he isn't in the Top 10 on the ATP Tour, but if he wants to be, he'll need to start winning matches like this one.

Beating a Top 10 ranked player like Rune would certainly be a good start to that journey, but it's going to be tough. The Danish player found his own good tennis this week and he'll certainly want to keep it going.

Head-to-head:

Unfortunately, we never saw Rune take on Coric before. They are somewhat similar players as they're all-around solid, but Rune is far more consistent with it and has far bigger weapons. The Danish player is capable of hitting tremendous winners from both sides, much like Coric, but he does it more often.

Prediction:

Coric could find an advantage on the serve. Both are pretty good with it, but the Croatian can have days where he's basically unplayable. His win over Stefanos Tsitsipas in Cincinnati in 2022 was literally him putting up a serve-bot performance.

The conditions here allow for that, so that's one thing he could use to counter Rune's aggressiveness. I do think he'll come up short, though, because I just like Rune's weapons more.

There is a danger that he will produce one of his worse showings, but we can't predict that. It's going to happen some days, regardless of the matchup. I don't think it will happen tomorrow, so back Rune to win.

Prediction: Holger Rune to win in two sets.
