Holger Rune Sheds Light On Mysterious Involvement Of Boris Becker In Coaching Team

by Sebastian Dahlman

Holger Rune prepared in Monaco for the upcoming 2023 Stockholm Open, with Boris Becker being present at those practices.

Rune has had a really tough time with his tennis lately, losing the majority of his matches. His most recent win was over Felix Auger-Aliassime in Beijing, which didn't really start any kind of winning streak.

He lost in the next round and then got smashed in his Shanghai Masters debut, which didn't leave a good impression on anybody. Before coming to Stockholm, Rune had a good practice week in Monaco as Boris Becker was present.

Nobody really knew what that was about, as there were no reports about the former player joining Rune's team, but it seems like he did provide some input. Rune talked about it before his Stockholm Open match against Miomir Kecmanovic.

It was a really good week of training. I have known Boris for a long time. He follows tennis a lot in general and he has written to me a few times. Also when I was a little younger, he gave me some tips and tricks. There he showed that he supports me.

Rune on Boris Becker becoming involved

You can feel it. That’s really a big difference. He can feel what I’m feeling. He can’t just say what he thinks I’m feeling, but he can feel it because he’s been in those situations himself. So it’s a different sensation and feeling. It is definitely a good thing to have someone who has tried it himself.

It's not the first time Rune went outside of his team for help, as he worked with Patrick Mouratoglou for a few months. It worked out really well for him so we'll see whether bringing in Becker as a mentor does something similar.

He won this event last year and it's a vital one for his ATP Finals aspirations.
