Carlos Alcaraz Withdraws From 2023 Swiss Indoors In Basel

Carlos Alcaraz won't be playing at the 2023 Swiss Indoors in Basel as he pulled out due to several injury problems.

Alcaraz played last year in Basel and did fairly well, with fans excited to see him again in Switzerland. It won't happen after the event announced his withdrawal on social media.

Earlier, Alcaraz revealed his plans to play in Basel, Paris, and the ATP Finals, but that schedule will look a bit different now. It's unknown how severe the injuries are and whether they threaten his participation in Paris, but he'll likely play at the ATP Finals.

There is no way he's missing that event for the second year in a row because, as we know, Alcaraz was prevented from playing at the event last year due to an injury in Paris.

That injury extended further into the new season, causing him to miss the Australian Open. The timing of this injury is not ideal, but it doesn't seem too severe.

The post by the Swiss Open indicated that Alcaraz has two separate issues: an inflammation in his foot and some issues with his gluteal muscles.

!Injured Alcaraz has to cancel Basel, Stan Wawrinka moves up to the main draw.  Alcaraz had to cancel his start at the Swiss Indoors (October 21-29) today due to an injury. According to his doctor's bulletin, the world number two is suffering from an inflammation of the sole of his left foot and problems in his gluteal muscles."

Those are not too severe issues and should both get better with sufficient rest. We'll see whether that will be in time for the Paris Masters or will go beyond that.

Either way, Alcaraz hopes to finish his year on a high note, but this withdrawal makes Djokovic likely to end up as world number one.

The Spaniard needs as many points as possible, and after botching the Asian swing, he hoped to get enough of them in Europe. It doesn't look too promising, but health is most important, so there is no reason to be obsessed too much over it.

As long as he's healtyh and plays in Turin, fans will be fine with it.
