Grigor Dimitrov vs Andrey Rublev: 2023 Shanghai Masters - Preview & Prediction

| by Sebastian Dahlman

Grigor Dimitrov seemingly can't lose at the 2023 Shanghai Masters, but Andrey Rublev will put that to the test in the semi-final on Saturday.

Grigor Dimitrov's runs at the Shanghai Masters didn't stop as he bested Nicolas Jarry to advance to the semi-final. His opponent's run didn't stop either, and Rublev added a win over Ugo Humbert to set up this clash, so what exactly will happen here?

Well, many things can happen here because both players are playing really solid tennis right now, with the conditions in Shanghai suiting both styles. Dimitrov kind of looked a bit more impressive, but that's a halo effect from his win over Carlos Alcaraz.

Rublev was no less impressive however, it's really tough to top beating Alcaraz. He doesn't have a lead in the H2H either, which means that this one will likely end up being a really close match, kind of like their matchup went so far.

Head-to-head:

The two played six times so far on the ATP Tour and the score is 3-3. Neither player managed to swing it to their side however Dimitrov did win the last one played last year. Rublev won their only clash in China four years ago and leas the H2H when it comes to outdoor matches.

Prediction:

It's pretty hard to assume what might happen here. In many ways, Dimitrov is seemingly playing a bit better right now and has had success against Rublev in the past. When it comes to Rublev, he is the better player overall and has had more success outdoors against Dimitrov He also has bigger weapons.

In these sorts of conditions, that's pretty important but I do think Dimitrov's resilience has been spectacular this week, so I'm going to side with him. I think he's been too good this week and will likely win again.

Prediction: Grigor Dimitrov to win in three sets.
