Grass Specialist: Sinner Reaches Back-To-Back Quarterfinals After Beating Sonego In Halle
Jannik Sinner is proving to be really solid on grass as he reached another quarter-final on the surface at the 2023 Halle Open.
Sinner was the player that pushed Novak Djokovic quite a bit last year at Wimbledon and he's proving really good on grass the year after as well. Playing against fellow Italian Lorenzo Sonego, Sinner managed to turn around a match where he lost the opening set, the same as his 1st round match.
It was supposed to be a much easier affair than it ended up being but the Italian managed to keep his cool and secure another grass quarter-final this year. The opening set was a very close one as it finished in the tiebreak.
Both players had chances to break in the first set, 4 chances for both but neither were able to get it done. The stats in general were pretty similar as they served okay and largely dominated on the opening set. Sinner had more winners but he still didn't manage to get it done as he was a bit too shaky in the tiebreak which went to Sonego 7-4.
The second set was another interesting one. The stats were pretty similar once more as both players had chances to break but it was only Sinner who was able to get it done. Like the first set, Sinner being sharper in the crucial rallies got him the set, the same way Sonego won the opening one.
The final one was probably the cleanest from both sides. Neither side didn't face too many break points and they both serve well. There were only a handful of errors as well but the theme was the same. Sinner was a bit sharper in the crucial rallies and was able to get it done even though Sonego had the first break point of the set.
A great comeback win for Sinner 6-7(4) 6-4 6-3 as he'll face either Struff or Bublik in the Halle Open quarter-final.
