Gael Monfils' Stockholm Open Triumph Marks His First Title As A Dad

by Sebastian Dahlman

Gael Monfils won the 2023 Stockholm Open, and it's actually the first title he won since he became a father, which makes it very special.

Gael Monfils has won many trophies in his career, as this one was the 12th he ever won, but it makes it undoubtedly the most special one for various reasons. It came at a time when there was a lot of doubt for the Frenchman, doubt about whether he really has what it takes to be among the best yet.

He's up there in age, and he's not getting any younger. It also marked 12 years since he last won the Stockholm Open, which he referenced on social media after winning the trophy.

And obviously, it's the first trophy he won since becoming a father, which he mentioned during the trophy ceremony.

Special week for me with 3 ladies. My mom, thank you. As always it’s nice to win a title in front of her. My wife Elina. Thank you. The last one my daughter Skaï who’s watching in front of the TV. It’s my first time as a father I’ve won a title. It’s very special.

Stockholm is a pretty good place for Monfils because winning a trophy twice at the same spot doesn't happen really often. He has a few of those, with Montpellier and Rotterdam being the other places he won at least two trophies. The win also makes him the oldest Stockholm Open champion ever at 37.

The funny thing is it’s my 12th title. 13 years later I won here. I guess 12 is my lucky number so.. crazy. Short story but long story. I’d like to thank Michael. Before Roland Garros, I told him I need his help again. He’s like really? I’m like ‘yes.’ He said ‘I watched your match. It was terrible. Tomorrow we’ll practice together.
