Taylor Fritz is unsure whether he's really good on clay or not but he was certainly pretty good on Friday beating Stefanos Tsitsipas for the semi-final.
There were a lot of firsts for Fritz on Friday in Monte-Carlo after he shook the hand of Tsitsipas following their match. It was pretty comfortable with for the American as he only needed two sets to down Tsitsipas who won the previous two editions of the Monte-Carlo Masters.
He became the first American in 20 years to book a place among the final four at the event and that's a pretty big deal. It's important for him to build confidence on a surface that always leaves him in doubt. He still doesn't know whether he's really good on this surface despite the good run.
I never really know if I’m good on clay or not. As it is every year for me on clay, it’s not natural for me. Obviously I have not spent a lot of time playing on clay, so I can’t just come to it and play well my first match or two. But I feel like I always, after a couple of matches, play much better.
One thing that Fritz knows for sure is that he prefers to play on the main court in Monte-Carlo compared to the other ones. He feels like he plays better on the main court and his level today certainly backs up those claims.
For whatever reason, I do think centre court plays much better, different than the other courts, and I have always felt like I play a lot better on centre court as opposed to the other courts here.
The American will play Andrey Rublev for a place in the final and a win there would be a major boost for Fritz as he looks to improve on clay.
