Frances Tiafoe vs Jannik Sinner: 2023 Vienna Open - Preview & Prediction

by Evita Mueller

Frances Tiafoe is playing some really solid tennis at the 2023 Vienna Open this week, but will it be enough to take down Jannik Sinner?

It could be, but the American will need to keep up his good play and start to play even better. His win over Gael Monfils was good, but it showed a few problems in his game.

He had a few questionable choices in really crucial moments early when Monfils was still playing well. As the French player collapsed physically, Tiafoe did take control of the match but it didn't look as clean as it should have been.

His tennis has generally disappointed in recent weeks as opposed to Sinner, who has been amazing for a while now. The Italian certainly looked good in Vienna so far, but this will be his biggest challenge by far. He's had some good wins over Tiafoe in the past but lost the most recent match in 2021.

Head-to-head:

That match was actually played in Vienna, and it was a win for Tiafoe in three sets. That was the crazy run of 2021 when he made it to the final, losing to Alexander Zverev in the final. Sinner won the other two. We haven't had matches between them recently.

Prediction:

There are a few things that make Sinner a huge favourite. The form is one because the Italian simply looked better recently. Playstyle is the other thing because Sinnr is the far cleaner hitter and he can overpower Tiafoe from the baseline.

The return is another thing, as Sinner can put a lot of pressure on Tiafoe with his return. The serve is probably the only thing that Tiafoe could have on his side, but that will largely depend on his mood. In short, the Italian is far more solid in all respects.

Prediction: Jannik Sinner to win in two sets.
