Dominic Thiem Awarded 2023 Winston-Salem Open Wild Card

by Sebastian Dahlman

Dominic Thiem is playing in Kitzbuhel this week, but he'll be in Winston-Salem later this month after receiving a wild card for the ATP 250 event.

Thiem is largely skipping the hard court prep for the double Masters' event in Cincinnati and Canada. The latter event is taking place next week, and that will be his first hard-court event in several months as he's coming straight off the clay.

Besides playing that event and the Cincinnati Masters after that, Thiem will be at the 2023 Winston-Salem Open as well to finetune his game for the US Open. He's had a really shaky record since winning the US Open a few years ago, missing it with an injury and everything else that happened.

It's been a rather shaky year for Thiem overall as he played only several matches that looked similar to the old Thiem. That level he had in the previous few years hasn't been seen pretty much since he won the US Open and it's a shame because the Austrian is really trying his best but it's not working.

He's not even playing well on clay, although his 14 wins in 28 matches on the surface are the best score out of all the surfaces. He only has one win outside of clay this year, and his record on the year generally is 15-23. That's very poor, and his ranking suffered because of that (116th right now).

Perhaps a trip to Wintson-Salem will do him good. It's an event that generally has a weaker field due to the US Open starting the following week, which means most players are already in New York getting ready. The biggest names in the entry list so far are Borna Coric, Gael Monfils, Jiri Lehecka, and many more, with the Austrian having a chance to score some solid wins.
