Novak Djokovic's triumph in Paris didn't just break a record or make tennis history it also allowed him to return to the top spot in the rankings.
The Serbian had many things to achieve by beating Casper Ruud in the final of the 2023 Roland Garros. One of those things was obviously becoming the first man ever to win 23 Grand Slam trophies. He also became the winningest man in terms of Grand Slams with 23, something Nadal congratulated him on.
He also became the first man ever to win all Grand Slam tournaments at least three times. And now, he'll also be the number one player in the world again after the 4-way battle for the number one spot concluded with the scenario that benefitted Djokovic the most.
To become world number one Djokovic had to win the event and obviously, he did. He also needed the other players who were contending for it to lose earlier than him which they also did. By beating Alcaraz in the semi-final Djovkoic basically ensured that he will become world number one if he wins the event and he did.
The Serbian will now sit a fair amount ahead of Carlos Alcaraz. Both players have over 7000 points with Djokovic at 7595 points and Alcaraz at 7175. They lead the standings comfortably ahead of Daniil Medvedev who has 6100 points with Casper Ruud now sitting at number four.
Reaching the No. 1 spot is another positive thing for Djokovic, and totally different than this time last year when his slippage on the rankings started happening. A good ranking will help him avoid difficult early matches, as he had with Alcaraz in the semifinal in Paris. After the triumph, the 36-year-old didn't hide that he was happy with the win.
"One of the biggest ones, of course. I knew that going into the tournament, going into the match especially today, that there is history on the line, but I try to focus my attention and my thoughts into preparing for this match in the best way possible to win like any other match."
