The showdown between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic at the ATP Finals was not a showdown, as the Serbian really crushed him.
It was supposed to be this big and great affair that was going to cement this rivalry, but it ended up being none of that. Nick Kyrgios predicted Djokovic would beat Alcaraz before the match, and he did predict it correctly, but nobody really thought it'd come this easily.
6-3 6-2 was the final score, and it wasn't much of a match. Alcaraz showed up only for a few games, and those games were great, but the rest of it really showcased Djokovic's superiority.
Despite the rather unproblematic win for the Serbian, he was very complimentary about his opponent, calling him one of the most complete players he ever faced.
Regarding the match, I knew from the beginning it would be very intense. We have played four times & he is one of the most complete players I have faced in my life. Very dynamic, very fast, capable of doing many things on defense & offense. It's a great victory for me. I served well when I should, it was an almost perfect match on my part.
Djokovic did give Alcaraz the ultimate compliment by preparing for the match really well. He was very focused from the start and you could see it from the way he approached it - ready for anything and everything.
That concluded a pretty good year for Alcaraz, who finished with a 67-12 record this year and six trophies. He hasn't played in a final since Cincinnati, which signals that the finish of the year wasn't very good, but at least he's healthy.
Regarding the rivalry, It will continue pretty soon with an exhibition match in Saudi Arabia on December 27th, just days before the new season officially starts.
