'History On the Line': Djokovic Ready To Fight For 23rd Grand Slam at Roland Garros

Novak Djokovic is highly motivated ahead of this year's Roland Garros because history is on the line as he aims to win number 23.

Novak Djokovic has won 22 grand slams so far in his career and it's the same number Nadal has. No player on the ATP Tour has ever won 23 grand slams and Djokovic aims to be the one who does it. With no Nadal in Paris, there is certainly a good chance that Djokovic does end up lifting the trophy.

He doesn't consider himself the favourite opting to share the 'burden' of that among several players but like many of the others, he is aiming to win the event. And with a chance to make some more tennis history, there is no shortage of motivation.

History being on the line is something that is very flattering and is very motivating, no doubt about it. Obviously Nadal not playing in the tournament here is a big loss for tennis, is a big loss for Roland Garros, because he's by far the most successful player to play in this tournament in the history.

Djokovic doesn't miss Nadal at the event but he does recognise that it would have been better overall if the Spaniard was there. Not having him there opens the draw up so there are several players that are capable of winning it. The hope for Djokovic is that he's the one.

So of course it opens up, you know, a chance and opportunity for the rest of us to try to get a title, because whenever he plays he's an absolute favorite here or any clay court tournament, for that matter. So I think the tournament is quite open, to be honest. Maybe a few guys that are at the top of the favorites list, but anyone can take it. I'm hoping it can be me.
