'Could Have Done Better': Berrettini After Alcaraz Loss Despite Seeing Positives

by Sebastian Dahlman

Matteo Berrettini crashed out of the 2023 Wimbledon Championships explaining that he could have done better after the match.

Berrettini is out of Wimbledon having been beaten by Carlos Alcaraz in the 4th round. It was a fair match, one where Berrettini took the opening set but then couldn't overcome a really superb Alcaraz who will face Holger Rune in the quarter-final.

It was a tough match for Berrettini but also one he was glad to play after all of his struggles this year. He admitted after that he could have probably done better than he did but when playing the best player in the world, or at least currently on the ATP Tour, then it's tough.

Yeah, yeah, tough loss. I mean, I played the best player in the world, so I expected this kind of level. I think he found a way to make me feel uncomfortable on court.

I think I still could have played better, but that's tennis. It's not always like what you wish for. Yeah, it's tough now, but I have to be proud of myself, look forward for what's next, yeah.

Berrettini only played one match on grass before coming to London and it was a rather poor one. He wasn't even sure that he would play at the event in the days leading up to it so obviously he admitted that it was a good tournament overall for him. Despite that the loss still hurt and it's something he'll need to digest before he can look at the positives.

Yeah, yeah, definitely, definitely. You know, now it's tough to put things under the right perspective. I don't like to lose, so... Right now it's tough to say it was a good tournament. I know it was.

Probably in a few hours, a few days, I'm going to appreciate even more what I did. I really thought about not playing two days before the tournament. So being in the fourth round and losing like this against Carlos, it's something I have to be proud of.
