Carlos Alcaraz is marching on at the 2023 US Open, and his next opponent is Daniel Evans, a tricky maze to navigate, so let's see how the Spaniard might do.

Navigating mazes almost comes naturally to Spaniards as their sea-fearing exploits are well known. Alcaraz is honouring that conquistador's legacy with his own exploits, though they are reserved for the tennis court.

Dan Evans comes from a country known for its own exploits, though his career has not yielded the kind of treasures Alcaraz's had so far this year. Their matchup in New York will see one advance to the 4th round, so let's see what might happen.

Head-to-head:

We've seen them contest two matches on the ATP Tour, with Alcaraz winning both. The first one happened in Vienna in 2021, and Alcaraz won it in two sets 6-4 6-3. Nothing spectacular, but the second win was a bit more impressive. It happened on clay earlier this year in Barcelona, and the score was 6-2, 6-2.

Prediction:

Alcaraz won both of their matchups relatively comfortably, and here is a good reason for that. Evans is a solid player, one that resorts to a playstyle that generally doesn't do well against the type of style that the 20-year-old Spaniard plays.

It's defensive and relies on countering, but that doesn't work so well when you have a mammoth on the other side who will beat you into depression with his shot-making and aggression. Another thing is the drop shot, which Alcaraz can utilise well when Evans gets pushed back behind the baseline.

There is just very little the Brit can do to frustrate the Spaniard. He could try hitting with him but that wouldn't go too well either. There is a matchup advantage for Alcaraz, and he's simply better.

Prediction: Carlos Alcaraz to win in three sets.
