Carlos Alcaraz has provided an update on social media after his sudden withdrawal from the ATP 500 event in Basel.
The social media pages of the event made the announcement, explaining that Alcaraz is dealing with some injuries that will keep him from playing at the 2023 Swiss Indoors in Basel.
It was a sudden announcement without any prior suggestion that it may happen, leaving fans concerned about the status of the Spaniard, especially since he has struggled with his tennis recently.
It also leaves only two events on his calendar, the Paris Masters and the ATP Finals, though we don't know whether he will play either. He missed the Finals last year because of an injury, and this looks eerily similar to that.
His own update on social media didn't really say much, but it seems like he plans on playing the events as this withdrawal is mostly to rest up as opposed to treating any kind of serious injury.
That's good news, but we'll see how it ultimately plays out, as he's been known to play down his physical status quite often.
"Unfortunately I will not be able to play in Basel this year! I have a problem with the plantar fascia in my left foot and muscle fatigue in my lower back which need treatment so I can play the rest of the season. I hope to see you all soon!"
The finish to the year was supposed to be huge for Alcaraz as he's battling Novak Djokovic for the year-end No. 1 rank. He finished as number one last year and has ambitions to do it again, but Djokovic looks closer to it with the way the season is unfolding now.
As for Alcaraz, we'll likely see him in Paris, where he looked pretty okay last year. It was a decent run that was cut short by an abdominal injury.
