Boris Becker generally doesn’t miss Wimbledon, but he did miss the 2022 edition as he was in prison, but he watched it, and he cried when Novak Djokovic won.
Becker is a legendary tennis player who had some legendary moments at Wimbledon. It’s the event he’s most remembered for, and for very good reason. He became one of the youngest Wimbledon champions ever, and that’s a milestone that still stands.
He also made a name for himself as part of tennis media in the past years, mostly covering Wimbledon for BBC, even though he didn’t do it for the 2022 edition.
Becker was sentenced last year after hiding some of his assets, which made headlines in the world of tennis. Djokovic has a really good relationship with Becker, as they used to work together for a couple of years.
At the time of the sentencing, Djokovic spoke candidly about the situation, admitting that he was heartbroken to see someone he considers a friend undergoing that.
As for Becker, now a free man, the German spoke about the way he experienced the 2022 Wimbledon Championships, which saw Djokovic win the trophy by beating Nick Kyrgios in the final in four sets.
It was an emotional experience for Becker, who would have loved to be present on site for the match, but as he was in prison, he couldn’t really do that. He didn’t miss any moment of it, though, as he watched it from prison, and he admitted to crying when Djokovic won.
"While I was inside [jail], Novak supported me, he supported my family. I started crying when he started winning. I’m very proud that probably the best player of all time is part of this story."
Becker is close with Djokovic, and seeing him do well clearly meant a lot to him. Now, he will have a chance to witness some of the Serbian's triumphs in person again.
