Felix Auger-Aliassime refused to shift blame from himself onto other people following an early exit at the 2023 Canadian Open.
Auger-Aliassime has been struggling with tennis for much of this year. It's an unfortunate development for the Canadian after he put together a couple of really solid runs last year. Most people expected him to build upon that, but he didn't get very lucky with injuries either.
The latest of bad losses came back home on Canadian soil as he was beaten by Max Purcell in the first round. Purcell is a decent tennis player, a Grand Slam doubles champion, but his singles level isn't that great. The loss was a shocking one for the Canadian, but he refused to shift the blame onto anyone other than himself.
I fight a little with myself. I felt good in training the last few days, but to start [the game] badly like that, it's totally my fault. It was the worst way to start a game, especially in a period like I'm living right now.
This loss was as bad as the Wimbledon loss which just shows that something has been going on for a while. It's not just a bad match but more so a trend. He'll need to figure out things quickly because he's got a lot of points to defend in the upcoming months. If he doesn't, he'll suffer a huge drop in the rankings. He's trusting his team in the process as he totally denied any fault from their side.
I don't think the solution is there. I have the same people around me who brought me there last year. We are all in solution mode internally to see how I can play better. But the main culprit is me. It's up to me to find the solution
