Wozniacki's Heroics Not Enough To Stop Wimbledon Champion Vondrousova In Montreal

Caroline Wozniacki played her second match on her comeback to the WTA Tour, but this time, it was a losing effort against Marketa Vondrousova at the 2023 Canadian Open.

In her first match in Montreal, the experienced Dane won her first match in 1295 days, but in the second round, she faced the reigning Wimbledon champion, Marketa Vondrousova, who wanted to avoid expectations in Montreal.

For Wozniacki, coming back was like riding a bike, and she showed it in her first-round match. But things didn't go so smoothly against the Czech player. After winning seven of the first eight rallies played, the Dane had two break points to go into a 2-0 lead, but that's when she felt the qualities of her opponent for the first time.

Vondrousova saved both break points, and in the following game, she broke her opponent's serve to lead 3-1. A few games later, the Wimbledon champion added another break, and even though the former world no. 1 tried to break back in the eighth game, her third break point also remained unused, as the Czech player won 6-2.

At the start of the second set, Vondrousova just refused to miss, and thanks to that, she built a solid two-break 3-0 lead. But eventually, the Czech player started struggling a bit, as Wozniacki refused to give up and recovered both breaks, even having a chance to go 5-3 up.

But after that chance remained unused, Vondrousova once again started playing perfect tennis, winning the last seven points of the match to set up a third-round clash with Coco Gauff, who is on a five-match winning streak. After the match, the Czech player said:

"It was a crazy tough match. She's playing amazingly after such a long time, and it was such a fight till the end. Just heads up to hear, and it was an amazing match."
