Andy Murray vs Stan Wawrinka: 2024 Roland Garros - Preview & Prediction

by Zachary Wimer

A couple of veterans will be facing each other at the 2024 Roland Garros as Andy Murray will play Stan Wawrinka.

This is a pretty fascinating matchup between two players who are both legends of the sport. Murray is supposed to retire in a few months after the summer, as per his words, which he repeated a few times.

Wawrinka isn't going to retire anytime soon based on his statements, but this could, too, possibly be the final Roland Garros of his career. He actually spoke about Murray recently admitting that he doesn't think he will truly retire, and now the two will meet.

The match is an interesting parallel to their 2020 Roland Garros meeting, which was the last time the Brit played in Paris before this year.

Murray skipped over the event in recent years, opting to focus on the grass, but is returning this year because it's his final French Open. The draw made a funny coincidence come true because he's playing Wawrinka again, just like 4 years ago.

Head-to-head:

As they've been around for a long time, we obviously saw a lot of matches between them. There have been 22 matches between them over the years, and Murray leads the H2H 13-9. Their 2020 Roland Garros match wasn't the most recent one they played because they played last year in Bordeaux.

Wawrinka bested Murray in that meeting 6-3, 6-0 and it was played on clay. There were a total of six matches on clay between them, and Wawrinka leads the H2H 5-1 in that statistic, which is not a huge surprise.

Andy Murray Stan Wawrinka
13 H2H 9
75 Rank 97
37 Age 39
5-8 2024 W/L 2-7
738-258 Career W/L 570-353

Prediction:

Wawrinka is a former champion in Paris, and he's the far better player on clay. Even so, he played below his level this year, so that doesn't mean he'll bring his top level to the French capital. I still think he'll beat Murray because the Brit himself isn't the best clay player.

Prediction: Stan Wawrinka to win in three sets.
