Alexander Zverev vs Jannik Sinner: 2023 US Open - Preview & Prediction

| by Evita Mueller

Alexander Zverev and Jannik Sinner sound like a fantastic matchup on paper, so let's see what might happen here.

Zverev and Sinner have played big matches at the US Open before; in fact, back in 2021, Zverev downed the Italian in the 4th round en route to a run to the semi-final. The German likes New York; he's played well here in the past, though Sinner had more success recently.

Both of them do well here so this promises to be a really good one. Both of them have played really solid tennis so far though Zverev dropped one set more. To be fair he faced tougher players though neither really faced too many troubles either way.

This one will be interesting, as Zverev generally does well against Sinner. He's actually only lost once to the Italian, but they haven't played since the German made a comeback earlier this year. Sinner has also improved considerably this year, which his results reflect.

Head-to-head:

So, we've seen this battle unfold four times so far. Zverev leads it 3-1, with one of those matches happening at the US Open as well. It happened back in 2021, and the German won comfortably in three sets. One year earlier, they battled at Roland Garros, and it was a win in four sets for Sinner.

Another one happened in Cologne in 2020, and Zverev won that, too. The most recent one occurred last year in Monte-Carlo. Zverev won in three sets.

Prediction:

So generally, it seems like Zverev does find his best tennis against Sinner and wins the match. I'm not sure it will happen here because the Italian has been quite impressive lately with the triumph in Toronto. Zverev had a good run in Cincinnati and has looked really good in New York as a week.

The outcome of this match will depend on Sinner, I feel. If he plays his best and doesn't spray too many errors, I see him winning the matchup. Zverev can do a lot to disrupt him, though, the serve particularly.

Prediction: Sinner in four sets.
