The ATP Sportsmanship Award is named after Stefan Edberg, and for years, it was awarded to only two players, but now youngsters Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz were nominated for the honor.
The first time this award was awarded to a player not named Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal since 2004 was last year when Casper Ruud got the honor. Before that, it was mostly Federer who dominated, having won it 13 times overall, with Nadal coming in second at 5.
Novak Djokovic interestingly never won the award, which many question due to his propensity to correct umpire calls. In any case, the award has been awarded since 1977 and has carried the name of Edberg since 1996, with this year's nomination list very interesting.
Novak Djokovic is again not in contention, which kind of means that he'll never win the award. That's quite something, but those who might win include two rising stars who will carry the sport forward.
Djokovic has been very complimentary of them even though they're starting to give him trouble, which is probably annoying.
Carlos Alcaraz is nominated for the award as the Spaniard is one of the most genuine players out there. He enjoys great points even if he loses them, and a smile is never too expensive while he's on the court.
He's shown his sportsmanship plenty of times both this year and before. Jannik Sinner is also nominated, and how could he not be after declining to make any calculations at the ATP Finals recently ensuring that Djokovic advances.
It backfired as he lost in the final, but he took the high road when he didn't have to. Grigor Dimitrov could easily be the ATP's best face, but the Bulgarian is also known as a very respectful player, so a nomination for him isn't surprising.
The same goes for Hubert Hurkacz, who is a giant on the court but a gentle one who is a much-deserved nominee. So what do you think? Tell us below.
