Last year's Paris Masters was a pretty big one for Carlos Alcaraz with huge consequences for his career, but he's not thinking about that this year.
Alcaraz was playing a really solid event last year in Paris, but then disaster struck as he injured himself. It was an abdominal issue that forced him to retire in the quarter-final against Holger Rune.
Any injuries that late in the season aren't good news, and that was the case back then. Nobody expected it to be as serious as it was but Alcaraz ultimately missed the ATP Finals which should have been his first one.
He missed a lot more than that, though, as an injury kept him out of this year's Australian Open, which is not ideal. Despite that, the Spaniard isn't really thinking about that, which is a good way to go about it.
Injuries happen, they're part of the sport, but luckily, they don't happen very often. Ahead of the 2023 Paris Masters, the 20-year-old spoke about his previous experiences and how he doesn't think about them.
Well, no, I'm really excited to play this tournament. You know, I just said I have not great memories, but I am trying to forget everything that happen the years before. You know, in 2021 I had not a good run. Last year, I think I surpass that rounds. Hopefully this year gonna be better.
But something that I'm not thinking about what happen last year and 2021. I'm just focusing on this one. You know, just thinking about my feelings on the court, that it's going really, really well. So excited to start the tournament.
He's not arriving in Paris in tip-top shape, as he withdrew from last week's Swiss Indoors due to two separate issues. The Spaniard also refused to confirm that he was fully healthy, admitting to feeling pain. He described it as normal for this part of the year.
