Dayana Yastremska is not one to forget easily, and she didn't shake hands with Eugenie Bouchard after their US Open qualifying match.
The matchup between Yastremska and Bouchard was highly anticipated due to the players' history. In the past, Bouchard commented about Yastremska and her doping ban after their match at the WTA 1000 event in Madrid, which wasn't well received.
The Canadian quickly apologized for her remarks, but the Ukranian hasn't forgotten being called a doper even though she cleared her name. She's proved to be quite open about her beliefs, never shying away from speaking her mind on things like the War in Ukraine.
Along with Kostyuk, Yastremska has been a vocal advocate for the total exclusion of Russian players, and it's not surprising that she reacted the way she did after the match. The match itself saw Yastremska play a very aggressive and attacking style.
She generally does, but you could see an added fire in how she approached this match in particular. She won the first set easily but couldn't win the second set, sending the match into a decider. In the third set, Yastremska overpowered her opponent, and after the match was over, they didn't shake hands.
Yastremska glanced over to Bouchard while walking to the umpire but simply continued towards the chair. She shook hands with the umpire and then left to her bench. Bouchard didn't act surprised nor make a fuss about it either, so in the end, it was a pretty fair conclusion to a great match.
The way Yastremska celebrated the win also indicates that the win meant a lot to her. Obviously, she's closer to the main draw, but it meant a lot more than just that. The crowd didn't have anything to add either, as we didn't hear any boos, but there wasn't much clapping either.
