Venus Williams 'Targeting March Return' & Rules Herself Out Of 2024 Australian Open

Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has disclosed her comeback plans for next season, confirming she will miss the 2024 Australian Open.

Venus Williams turned professional in 1994 at the age of 14 and intends to play for an astonishing 30th year in 2024. In a video posted on X, the 43-year-old confirmed that she is currently recovering from a nasty fall she suffered in her first-round defeat to Elina Svitolina at Wimbledon.

Although she worked tirelessly to recover for the US Open, Venus stated that her best form deserted her during the US swing where she scored one win in three tournaments. That included a dismal defeat to Greet Minnen at her home Slam where she won two games.

Williams' 2023 campaign has been blighted by injuries. She has played 10 matches this year from just seven tournaments. Venus was reportedly weighing up to play doubles at the Tunisia Open in Monastir, partnering Top 10 player Ons Jabeur.

But Venus, who had initially called time on her doubles career, is unlikely to play in the tournament due to her current injury, revealing that she is resting until the Sunshine Swing in March rolls around.

For context, Jabeur has also withdrawn from her home tournament, presumably from the knee injury that curtailed her Zhengzhou Open campaign. And now Venus appears to have shut down her season and is plotting a March return. That effectively rules her out from next year's Australian Open where she would have needed a wild card to play.

"I had a crazy fall at Wimbledon. I just slipped and I was out. I tried my best to recover for the US Open. I did not reach my form so now I am just resting until I get back. I am targeting March, that's when the tournaments go back to the States, so my goal is to be up and running when tournaments come back to the US."
