Despite playing excellent tennis at the 2023 Zhengzhou Open, Ons Jabeur was forced to withdraw from the event due to a knee problem.
Jabeur has been playing really solid tennis since touching down in China a while ago. She played amazing in Ningbo, reaching the final and actually winning the trophy.
That was her first trophy won on a hard court, which is a great achievement for the Tunisian player. She hoped that title would kick-start her collection, but those attempts now had to come to a stop.
She didn't have a good time at the China Open in Beijing, but opted to play in Zhengzhou and was looking destined to make another final, but it won't happen.
She bested Lucia Bronzetti in two sets, but admitted after the match that her knee bothered her a little bit. It didn't look that serious, but considering that the WTA Finals are around the corner, some fans got worried about that.
Eventually, it turns out the injury will prevent her from playing for at least a little while, as she admitted in a video, which she recorded to announce her withdrawal from the event, as her knee 'doesn't feel good.'
"I’m sorry I have to withdraw. My knee isn’t feeling so great. I’d just like to say I loved my time in Zhengzhou."
It's terrible news for Jabeur, who didn't look too worried in the video, smiling, which might indicate that it's only a minor problem that shouldn't really impact her participation at the WTA Finals at the end of this month.
Even so, it might prevent her from playing in Monastir, which is a home event for her and one she doesn't want to miss. She was set to play both singles and doubles as Venus Williams came out of doubles tennis retirement to play with her at the event.
