'Unfortunately': Svitolina Opens Up About Having To Travel To US Open Without Daughter Skai

Elina Svitolina is in New York for the US Open with her husband, Gael Monfils, leaving their daughter Skai back home.

Travelling is very taxing on the body, and tennis players know it best. You're never in one place weekly, changing locations, and that's just not a great environment for a young child. While Svitolina competed earlier this year, Monfils looked after the baby as he was away with injuries.

Now that she's backing competing on the WTA Tour, daughter Skai was left back home for the sake of her health. It's a tough thing for both her and Monfils because they miss her dearly but it's for the best. The Tour is just not a great environment for a young child like that.

In a couple of years, when she's older and strong perhaps but for now she's remaining back home in Switzerland.

No, Skai is not with us. She's at home. We decided for the sake of her health to leave her at home, unfortunately. We miss her really much because this is like the last push now. It's been one month now that we didn't see her. We FaceTime every single day. But, yeah, it's not easy.

Both Monfils and Svitolina made winning starts at the US Open as they hope to conclude the North American stretch on a high note. It's been a great summer for Svitolina, who had great results at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

Adding a good run at the US Open would be great for Svitolina and she started off well.

Yeah, it was a good start from my side. I think I played well, served well. I was, of course, a bit tricky at the beginning. 3-All, and then I just tried to pick up my good level again. Yeah, was playing well. I'm really happy the way I was serving, moving, hitting the ball. So, yeah, happy with the win in straight sets.
