Iga Swiatek is not a fan of expanding the WTA 1000 events to two-week events, as she thinks it will drive players to skip events.
Having back-to-back 14-day events is going to be a problem for many players, according to Swiatek, because the back-to-back weeks, as it is, are pretty tough on the body. The Polish player is tired after two solid runs in Cincinnati and Montreal.
She admitted it after her loss to Coco Gauff at the 2023 Cincinnati Masters, which prompted the media members to ask her about the events expanding to two-week events starting next year. She has no idea how it will go, but she's fairly certain that it's going to be challenging.
I have no idea. I've been thinking actually of, like, asking former players, because they have more kind of experience in situations like that. I know for sure that it's different having a day off during the tournament. You're still thinking about your matches and what to improve.
It's not like you can do a lot in terms of practicing, as well, because mostly you're just catching rhythm for one hour because you have to stay fresh for matches. It is going to be challenging in terms of that.
The overwhelming feeling with Swiatek is that it's going to be tough to balance it out because players will be forced to pick and choose which events to play. She expects more players to skip some of these Masters because it's going to be impossible to play all of them, especially with such a long season as it is.
I don't know what's better. We'll see. But I think it's going to be tough for us to play throughout the whole season. I think we will kind of have to choose that we're going to skip one of these tournaments.
