Swiatek Admits To Requesting Day Session Matches Amid Scheduling Controversy

The French Open organizers have received much criticism for not choosing women's matches for the night session, but Iga Swiatek admitted she has been requesting day sessions.

A night session on Court Philippe-Chatrier was introduced during last year's French Open, but COVID-19 restrictions meant its introduction was somewhat complicated for players and organizers.

Fans being able to fully attend the night sessions this year means there is scrutiny around which contests get chosen. Unlike the US Open, which has two matches per session, Roland-Garros has only one per night.

Many fans are unhappy that only men's matches have been chosen for the night session so far. Organizers might argue that women playing the shorter best-of-three format means it is necessary to give spectators a better chance of getting value for money.

However, the quality of the women's game means the annoyance of some is understandable, but Iga Swiatek admitted she has been requesting day session matches throughout the tournament.

"Well, my thoughts didn't really change, but honestly, I have to tell you that I kind of requested every day to play a day session because I felt like I played already night sessions in this clay court swing."

Swiatek also said she had not been aware of the controversy because she is recovering and does not think about tennis during the night session, but the 22-year-old acknowledged it would be nice to have women's matches at that time.

"Well, I didn't even, like, kind of know this because I'm not watching these late evening matches. I'm mostly just kind of recovering and not thinking about tennis. But obviously it would be nice if we had women's matches as well."

"But, as I said, I'm not kind of helping that because I always requested a day session match. But I don't really know what the schedule is for next day, so I can't really go that far and judge because I haven't really checked it."
