Taylor Fritz experienced what it feels like to face the home crowd at the 2023 Roland Garros after his second-round win.
As the players entered the Court Suzanne-Lenglen for the last match of the Thursday's session, one thing was clear and that was that if France wants to have their player in the third round of the ATP draw, Arthur Rinderknech needs to beat the highest-ranked American.
And the French crowd did their best to support their player, but there was one man that had different goal in that match. The man was obviously Taylor Fritz, who came to win and advance to the third round of the 2023 Roland Garros.
But the French player and the French crowd were happier after the first set as Rinderknech managed to win it 6-2. Yet, an amazing comeback from Fritz followed as the ninth seed won the match 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.
After the match, he celebrated massively. Fritz pointed to his mouth multiple times, showing the French crowd to be quiet. He did that once again after he shook hands with his opponent, even ironically sending kisses to the crowd.
But it's not a good game to play with the enraged crowd. Immediately after they cheered on their player as he left the court, the crowd started showing what they think about the American's gesture.
They started booing, and they continued booing for a very long time. And even though booing seems to be trendy lately, this was different. The crowd kept on booing for seconds, even minutes and Marion Bartoli was unable to do the interview with the winner of the match.
She attempted to silence the crowd multiple times, but the former French player wasn't successful. Even one of the event organizers asked the crowd to be quite, but that also didn't help.
When Bartoli attempted to ask her question, Fritz told her that he really can't hear her as she came closer to ask. Once the question was asked, the American replied ironically, provoking the crowd even further.
"The crowd was just so great that I had to let it fire me up. They cheered so well for me, I wanted to make sure I won. Thanks guys."
You can watch both videos of how Fritz celebrated after his win against the last Frenchman standing, but also how the crowd kept on booing him for over a minute.
