Maria Sakkari crashed out early from the US Open and admitted to considering a break from tennis due to bad results.
The Greek hasn't had a very good season this year enduring a couple of early losses in big events. Her confidence took a huge hit with these results and it reflected in her level. All of that became a chain of events that basically kept her in a very dark place emotionally.
She was very disappointed another early exit at the US Open, announcing that she's considering taking a break from the sport. She wouldn't be the first player to take a break, as we've seen a couple of players taking one in recent years.
Her press conference was obviously recorded as all were, and it made its way back home and around social media. She received much support back home in Greece and from fans, which motivated her to keep battling. She's a fighter and prides herself on it, so she couldn't just give up.
She's already back to playing taking part in the San Diego Open, and it was there that she explained what made her do a U-turn on her previous comments, as reported by The Tennis Letter.
I didn’t know it was being recorded. I didn't know it was going to get as big as it got, especially back home. The amount of messages, love, & support from people back home & from a lot of my colleagues was very nice.
I'm very thankful that I have people on the tour that support me like that. That was the main reason why I decided I want to keep going. They gave me a lot of strength. That was one of the nicest things I've felt in my career.
She will begin her San Diego campaign against Camila Osorio after having a first-round BYE as the third seed.
