Dayana Yastremska completed a pretty strong win over Eugenie Bouchard in the US Open qualifiers, which is pretty good revenge.
What revenge you say? Well, some time ago, Bouchard made some comments about Yastremska, which didn't go well in the tennis community. The Canadian player quickly apologized after her remarks, but there was an added motive here today.
It was quite visible in the way the Ukranian approached the match, and if we come to know anything about Yastremska in the past year, she doesn't shy away from speaking her mind. The opening set was one-sided, completely dominated by Yastremska.
Yastremska plays very aggressively and hits the ball hard. Initially, that was very overwhelming for the Canadian who didn't find any good solutions early. She did find solutions in the second set taking it 6-4 which made things interesting.
Yastremska rarely goes through a whole match playing at a very high level, and that was the case in this one as well. Bouchard lost her initial break but broke again at 5-4 to finish it. The final set opened with heavy pressure from the Canadian, and Yastremska barely hung on. Predictably, she once again caught fire from the baseline, and it was enough for her to break her opponent midway through the set.
From there it was a rather simple journey towards the finish line because, at her best, Yastremska easily outhit Bouchard. She had a chance to break her once more but it didn't matter much as the final score was 6-1 4-6 6-4 for the Ukrainian.
She dominated but also ran into some issues in the second set when her level inevitably dropped. Not much to say for Bouchard who simply can't produce the level she needs in order to be competitive with the best. Another disappointing outing this year.
