Paula Badosa has provided an update before the upcoming North American swing that includes two WTA 1000 and one Grand Slam event.
Badosa last played at Wimbledon, where she was forced to retire in her match against Marta Kotsyuk. It was just the latest setback in a very injury-plagued season that saw her miss a lot of big events. Her level hasn't been terrible when she played, which is what makes this particularly painful, as she played pretty well when she was healthy.
The injury struggles weren't something prevalent in her career previously, so it's something totally new for Badosa. Luckily she has a great way to distract herself as she works her way towards full fitness. The Spaniard held a Q and A session on Instagram recently, and one of the questions was about her status moving forward.
She is going to see a doctor in order to check how things are progressing and whether she'll be cleared to play. The goal is to be ready for the Canadian Open in Montreal, which is on August 7th days though it's not a certainty that she'll be able to go. We'll see what happens, but she will be present regardless.
I’m getting better. It’s a slow process because it’s a very delicate site. Catching a flight now to see the doctor so he can soon be back in competition. Montreal is my next destination if all goes well. Let’s go.
The Spaniard has played only 27 matches so far and has an 18-9 record overall, which is pretty solid. Unfortunately, this is likely going to be the season with the least amount of matches in years, as she's not likely to hit 60 matches played like she did in previous years. As long as she recovers well and makes her way back to the courts, things should be fine.
