Sorana Cirstea was asked about Jelena Ostapenko at Wimbledon and she clarified that they weren't good friends.

A story about Jelena Ostapenko is never devoid of controversy and as you might have guessed this one isn't either. The Latvian player is one of the most known characters on the WTA Tour thanks to her bombastic rants as well as her playstyle which can range from fabulous to dreadful.

Earlier this year, Ostapenko made headlines when she declared that she doesn't trust electronic line calling systems which is fine in itself but she doesn't trust human umpires either. Most of her matches will have her questioning multiple calls, convinced the ball was wide or in, even if the technology or umpire says otherwise.

Being such a character makes it a bit hard to make friends on Tour particularly if you swear at your opponent mid-match. Ostapenko used to be great friends with Sorana Cirstea as they played doubles together while visiting each other outside of the Tour.

They just played at Wimbledon with Cirstea winning the match but before the match, she needed to clarify that they weren't friends. Cirstea was asked about their friendship and she emphatically denied it while praising Ostapenko as a player.

"I would like to let me clarify this matter, we are not good friends that go out to dinner or tell each other confidence. We are simply colleagues. Ostapenko is an extraordinarily good player, much better than she appears at first glance. She has great hands, she's very aggressive . All the matches were difficult for me."

Interesting comments from Cirstea indicating a possible fallout. It's not impossible because we've seen it happen on the Tour before. Their first match on grass was good, with Cirstea upsetting her colleague in three sets. The Romanian herself was caught up in a controversy recently after endorsing some views that many found questionable.
