Sorana Cirstea is facing heavy backlash after sharing a story on Instagram that many perceived as an endorsement of 'outdated views'.
If there was a handbook of how to be a public person then you'd probably find a rule about keeping most of your controversial opinions for yourself. Obviously, opinions are not controversial in itself because, as in many cases, context matters.
Denying the existence of God was very controversial 500 years ago. That is not the case today, especially among young people. Hitting a woman wasn't particularly controversial at the same time yet it's unacceptable today. In short, context matters. What is controversial in place A isn't in place B and vice versa.
Sorana Cirstea took to social media to share some of her views or at least, presumably, give an endorsement to the stated in the story but it created a lot of backlash from fans. She posted a story which said the following:
Make men masculine again.Make women feminine again.Make children innocent again.
Now depending on where you fall on the political spectrum, you might agree, disagree, partially agree, or throw your phone away. Fans however found a lot of problems with this statement. One pointed out that depending on how you view femininity or masculinity, Cirstea isn't what she preaches - a feminine woman in the traditional sense.
She is muscular, unmarried, childless woman in her 30s which is traditionally considered not feminine. I want to know what she means by feminine and masculine.
Cirstea has been rather outspoken in the past not afraid to speak her mind when she feels like it though she hasn't expressed opinions like this before. She did catch a lot of criticism a few years ago when she defended Nastase after he insulted British players during a Billie Jean King Cup tie.
Fans were furious that she defended very sexist comments by Nastase who allegedly referred to Konta and Keothavong as f***ing b***es.
Anyone who remembers Cirstea defending Nastase after his sexist comments will fail to be surprised by this.
Cirstea is facing Tatjana Maria in the first round of Wimbledon, a player who defeated her at last year's Wimbledon. She hasn't commented on this stance publicly as she wasn't asked by the media about it though it might happen after her match.
Tennis fans on social media were hugely negative in their reaction towards these 'oudated views' which is expected as they generally skew younger and liberal on average.
