'My Goal Was Top 100': Svitolina Happy With Progress Despite Disappointing US Open Exit

Elina Svitolina's run at the 2023 US Open finished at the hands of Jessica Pegula, but she's content with how she played recently.

Svitolina had a fantastic summer producing noteable efforts both at Roland Garros and at Wimbledon. Neither run went to the final or saw her contest the trophy but nobody really expected her to play as well as she did to begin with.

Her return at the Charleston Open earlier this year didn't happen that long ago, and what she achieved in the past few months has been amazing. She recognized it after the loss to Jessica Pegula in the third round of the 2023 US Open, explaining how the goal was just to return to the Top 100 on the WTA Tour.

Well, to be fair, my goal was to enter top 100 when I started playing in March (smiling). For sure I'm happy with the matches I had. There are some matches, of course, disappointed, and I wish I could play better, like the semifinal Wimbledon, today.

Today little bit different situation. Physically I couldn't push more. Again, in Washington against Jess, it was closer match there. So couple of matches here and there I wish I could there. So couple of matches here and there I wish I could play better.

Her most recent exploits will put her firmly in the Top 30, and that's far more than she would have hoped for. The Ukrainian has exceeded her goal ranking-wise; she's content with the way she played, and now it's about finishing the season strong. Moreover, she still has a lot of ground to gain on her competitors next season, as she has no points to defend until May.

I'm very happy with the tournaments that I played, and with the season, I'm close to top 20, to come back. Yeah, I'm taking a lot of positives from this.
