Pegula Stops Svitolina Comeback To Join Growing List Of Americans In Second Week At US Open

Home fans at the 2023 US Open will be happy to see another American in the second week as Jessica Pegula defeated Elina Svitolina in three sets.

From young blood in Ben Shelton, to more experienced players like Frances Tiafoe, there are many American players in the second week of the 2023 US Open. Also, in the WTA draw, Coco Gauff leads the charge, and after Madison Keys joined her in the second week on Sunday, her doubles partner, Jessica Pegula, did the same thing a few hours later.

When talking at the event in New York, Pegula said that Gauff could take the pressure, as the youngster is considered to be one of the biggest favourites at the 2023 US Open, and her more experienced compatriot is trying to fly somewhat under the radar, despite being the third seed.

After winning the first two matches, the American took probably the most challenging opponent so far, as Elina Svitolina has been playing sensational tennis for quite some now. The two met only a few weeks ago in Washington, and it was a victorious effort for Pegula back then.

This time around, the home player wanted to add another win, and she made sure to rush towards that goal early on in the match. She was the only player that had break points in the opening set, and after only 41 minutes, Pegula won it 6-4.

But if one thing was sure, it was that Svitolina wouldn't go down without a fight. The Ukrainian avoided break points in the second set of the match, and she created three chances for herself in the tenth game, and after using the last one, she won the second set 6-4.

But after playing a great second set, Svitolina couldn't follow up on the success in the third set. Pegula eventually proved to be the better player, winning the match 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, and joining the growing list of Americans in the second week of the 2023 US Open.

Up next, Pegula will play fellow compatriot Madison Keys, who she played only once before, in San Diego last year, despite having multiple chances to meet over the past few weeks as the American remembered after her win.

"We’ve been in the same section every single tournament like the last three or four tournaments. And we were like ‘I think the world just wants us to play,’ so I’m glad we get to put on a show for you guys, she's an amazing player, super powerful, so it’s gonna be really tough."
