Marketa Vondrousova has withdrawn from the Wimbledon doubles event, citing an ankle injury as the reason.
Vondrousova is an interesting tennis story as the Czech player contested the French Open final years ago. She never quite reached the same heights since then, also because of injuries, but played some really solid tennis at times.
There is a lot of talent in her; it's just that her body didn't really allow her to play on the highest level many times. She produced her best-ever effort at Wimbledon this year, making her way to the semi-final, where she'll play Elina Svitolina who defeated Iga Swiatek. It's an interesting matchup, one that Svitolina dominated earlier, but the last two matches were won by Vondrousova.
The last one back in 2021 was a huge one for both players as it was the Olympics semi-final. Vondrousova won it comfortably 6-3 6-1 to advance to the final, where she lost to Belinda Bencic. Svitolina ultimately won the bronze medal, but the Ukniran will be hoping to actually win the match this time around.
She might have gotten a boost in her chances as Vondrousova doesn't seem to be fully healthy. The Czech player withdrew from her doubles match against Elise Mertens and Storm Hunter. The reason for the withdrawal was an ankle injury.
It's an unfortunate situation, but the injury doesn't seem too serious as she can still play on it. She's had ankle injuries before, so it might be something that she's used to. Hopefully, she steps out and plays a solid match, and the better player wins.
She was very excited after beating Jessica Pegula, who also withdrew from another competition at Wimbledon to focus on singles, in the previous round.
Yeah, it's amazing feeling. I was down one point in the third set. So, yeah, I mean, my thoughts weren't so good. Yeah, I mean, I'm just very happy. I was fighting through the whole match. Yeah, it's amazing feeling.
