Sofia Kenin is having a great week at the 2023 San Diego Open as the former Australian Open champion added another win, this time over Anastasia Potapova.
Two Russian-born players played at the San Diego Open, and it was the older Kenin who got the win in the end. It's been a really good week for Kenin, probably her best in a really long time, as she's playing really solid tennis.
It's been a long time since she played that way even though she had some good moments earlier this year. Kenin advances to the semi-finals following this win and it comes after a pretty sturdy performance against a tricky player.
Potpova is a tough opponent, especially when she's playing well and she's been playing really well this week. Unfortunately, she didn't play the greatest match today. It started badly with an early break for Kenin, and it kind of spiralled after that.
The first set ended 6-2 for Kenin as Potapova greatly struggled with her serve. She had 7 double faults, which put her under a lot of pressure as every weaker serve was immediately attacked by Kenin. She was a bit stronger in the second set, even taking a 3-1 lead at one point, but that was the last good thing she did in the set.
She once again struggled with her serve, and it proved a great issue down the stretch as Kenin imposed her will in rallies, and that was the final nail in the coffin of Potapova. The American finished off the match with a 5-0 run for the final score of 6-2 6-3.
A semi-final for Kenin, who might face compatriot Emma Navarro in the next round, or Maria Sakkari. That match is coming up, and it will be a great one either way. Sakkari is also making a good push, so fans would certainly enjoy that one if it happens.
