Jabeur Admits To Injury Problems Despite Another Win In Zhengzhou

by Sebastian Dahlman

Ons Jabeur looked shaky in her match against Lucia Bronzetti at the 2023 Zhengzhou Open and after the match admitted to an injury problem that plagued her.

Jabeur had a typical performance against Bronzetti, both brilliant and very shaky at times, but overall, it was just enough for a straight-sets win at the WTA 500 tournament.

For the most part, Jabeur dominated the match but also complicated things for herself, which is hardly surprising. Much of those complications came in the second set where she wasted a couple of chances to serve out the match having to finish things off in the tiebreak.

She failed to serve out the match three times and converted only her 5th match point to win the match. After the match, she shed light on what made it so tough to win.

It was a tough finish. She’s a great player, such a fighter. I’m glad I finished in 2. It would’ve been a different story if it was 3 sets. We learned a lot from this match & hopefully all the best for the future.. I tried to do my best until the end of the season. It’s very very tough with the knee. Today wasn’t 100%. Let’s see.

Jabeur on the match against Bronzetti

Jabeur has already dealt with some injury problems this year so it's not good news that she's dealing with some sort of discomfort. It's even less good news because it's a knee problem that can be notoriously tough to manage.

Even so, with the WTA Finals around the corner, Jabeur likely wouldn't risk a serious injury by playing a smaller event.

On another note, being close to a trophy is certainly a motivating factor, and she'll have plenty of time to rest up for the WTA Finals if she does go all the way and win the trophy. She's the top seed after all and already has one trophy from Ningbo.
