"I think I pulled something": Raducanu after Nottingham retirement

Emma Raducanu had to retire from her opening round match at Nottingham and the home favourite gave an update about her injury after the match.

The British player appeared to struggle after the first game, quickly taking a medical timeout. Something around her rib area seemed to be bothering her, but she elected to continue.

Despite this, Raducanu did break to go 3-1 up in the first set. Unfortunately, the US Open champion's condition then deteriorated even further. After Golubic won 3 games in a row to go 4-3 up, Raducanu elected to retire.

It is another setback in Raducanu's difficult season so far. Her best result was a quarterfinal run in Stuttgart, where she lost to Iga Swiatek. The rest of her year has been plagued by inconsistency.

After retiring, Raducanu spoke about the situation. She was still slightly unclear about the problem and admitted she did not want to sound like an expert when she is not a trained doctor.

"I need to get a scan. I'm not going to Google doctor myself, so I'll get it checked out. The first game an absolute freak, I think I pulled something, I am not really sure what exactly happened."

Raducanu also said that despite sustaining the injury in the first game, she knew many people would be critical of her if she retired after the opening game. Hence, she tried to keep playing, but it was futile in the end.

"I was thinking ‘I don’t know how I am going to do this’. But if you do something in the first game people will be like ‘Well why did you walk on to the court’. I definitely tried to get through it but in the second game I called the physio on and at the first changeover she was trying to do some work but even from there she told me it was going to be really difficult to continue."
