The 2025 Monterrey Open, scheduled for August 18th to 23rd, offers significant prize money and ranking points to the players.
Linda Noskova won last year's iteration. The Czech defeated Wimbledon quarterfinalist Lulu Sun to secure her maiden WTA title at the third attempt. Before that success, she lost finals in Adelaide and Prague.
That was the Monterrey Open's first year as a WTA 500 event. Founded in 2009, it has been successful since the beginning due to terrific support from the Mexican fans, known to be among the best in tennis.
Garbine Muguruza, Ana Ivanovic, Elina Svitolina, Leylah Fernandez, and Donna Vekic being former winners demonstrate how the tournament managed to attract top players before being awarded WTA 500 status.
That trend has continued for 2025. Emma Navarro is the top seed after accepting a wild card for the event. That meant the American withdrew from the US Open mixed doubles, where she was scheduled to play with Jannik Sinner.
Noskova and Sun have been drawn together in a repeat of last year's final. Vekic, Fernandez, Maria Sakkari, and Beatriz Haddad Maia are among the other players who are in this year's Monterrey Open draw.
All those competing will fight for the most significant share of the $1,064,510 pot. That is significantly more than the prize money on offer at the 2025 Cleveland Open, which began on Sunday and also runs until the 23rd.
The 2025 Monterrey Open champion will earn 500 ranking points and $164,000, an increase of 15.5% from the $142,000 Noskova received after she won her maiden WTA title in Mexico.
Whichever woman finishes as the runner-up is also guaranteed to earn more than in 2024. The $101,000 is higher than the $87,655 given to Sun last year, but the ranking points of 325 are the usual amount.
Navarro and Ekaterina Alexandrova were 2024's beaten semifinalists. $59,005 and 195 points will be provided to the women who replicate that achievement by being among the four best players in Monterrey.
Svitolina, Erika Andreeva, Yue Yuan, and Magdalena Frech got to last year's quarterfinals without progressing any further. The guaranteed amounts for 2025's defeated quarterfinalists are $31,100 and 108 points.
Navarro, Ekaterina Alexandrova, Diana Shnaider, and Haddad Maia will be the top four seeds in Monterrey, unless one of them withdraws late. They receive a bye into the round of 16.
That means they are ensured at least 60 points and $15,825. Every other player in the draw, including those seeded from five to eight, must win a match to reach the round of 16 and avail of those awards.
The 12 players who fall in the opening round only get one ranking point, but will still have $11,300 added to their bank accounts. That is not a bad amount for failing to win a main draw match, although some did come through qualifying to reach that point.
Everything is in place for a memorable tournament. Hopefully, the players will deliver and provide the Mexican fans with plenty of entertainment.
