Jannik Sinner will not compete in the mixed doubles tournament at the 2025
US Open after retiring from his Cincinnati Open final.
On Monday afternoon, Sinner played against Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the
ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati. However, he didn't finish it after being forced to withdraw after only 20 minutes.
Following both finals in Cincinnati, Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek quickly flew to New York together, hoping to compete in the mixed doubles event at the US Open. They shared a private jet.
As for Sinner, it wasn't clear whether the Italian player would even attempt to make it to Flushing Meadows and compete at the event. He was set to team up with the former doubles WTA World No. 1 player,
Katerina Siniakova.
The duo was drawn against Alexander Zverev and Belinda Bencic in the first round of the tournament, but that match won't happen. It was scheduled as the last first-round match on the Louis Armstrong Stadium, giving Sinner plenty of time to recover, but the World No. 1 player still felt like he wouldn't be able to make it.
His name disappeared from the draw and from the schedule of play, and he will now need to be replaced. Right now, it's not clear whether Siniakova will be able to partner with someone else, or if a completely new pairing will enter the draw.
There was a huge interest in this mixed doubles event, mostly due to the large prize pool. Many doubles specialists wanted to enter the draw, but only one purely doubles pairing made it to the draw: Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori.
Sinner hopes to forget Cincinnati disappointment in New York
Sinner was so physically drained after the final in Cincinnati that he didn't even hold the traditional press conference. Instead, he only talked to an ATP representative, answering a few questions.
At the time, the Italian player wasn't asked about his mixed doubles event, but he spoke about the US Open, saying that he hopes to peak both mentally and physically at the tournament.
"Yeah, I love Grand Slams a lot. This is the main, main tournaments my season and for my career. So the US Open is going to be a tough tournament, but at the same time, I'm looking forward to it."
"If I'm ready, physically and mentally, I'm, I will be ready to push. So as I said, now a couple of days of recovery, and then, you know, we get again back to work, and hopefully we'll be ready. So for sure, the main goal here in the US."
